Higher magnification images of the neocortex in multiple lobes shows marked neuronal loss, and extensive astrocytosis with a limited degree of residual spongiform vacuolation. The neuron loss and astrocytosis clearly is transcortical. Adjacent superficial white matter is gliotic.
