Case 6 History ---- The patient is a 75 year old man who first developed signs of dementia in 8/96. This was followed by a rapid progression, such that within 4-5 months the patient was bedridden, mute, blind, and unable to feed himself. A gastrostomy tube was placed to provide enteral nutrition and the patient was given supportive care in a nursing home facility. The patient's EEG findings, positivity for brain protein 14-3-3, and clinical course were compelling for a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The patient's recent course was complicated by aspiration pneumonia, myoclonus, and decubitus ulcers. The patient was a resident of a nursing home where he died in 8/1997.
