At autopsy the fresh brain weighed 1005g. ---- 8A1,2 External examination showed severe focal atrophy of the frontal lobe and moderate atrophy of the temporal and parietal lobes; the occipital lobe was mildly affected. Coronal slicing revealed severe dilatation of the lateral ventricles with rounding of the angles. The hippocampi appeared small. The brainstem and cerebellum were unremarkable and the substantia nigra and locus ceruleus were of normal pigmentation.
