At autopsy the weight of the unfixed brain was 1270g. The sulcal/gyral pattern showed marked atrophy in the frontal and parietal lobes bilaterally and mild to moderate atrophy in the temporal and occipital lobes bilaterally. The cerebellar hemispheres were full and equal in size. The brainstem had a normal configuration, and the cranial nerves are paired and unremarkable. ---- 9A1,2 H&E stained sections show global involvement of the brain by spongiform changes. The frontal and temporal cortices show severe spongiform neurodegenerative changes including microvacuolation of the cortex, neuronal loss, and gliosis.
