The frontal lobe contusions show significant hemorrhage within the deeper frontal lobe white matter. ---- Not shown: Widespread areas of diffuse glial and neuronal loss were found in which there were numerous lipid- and hemosiderin-laden macrophages. The margins of the lesions demonstrate reactive astrocytes, capillary proliferation, edema, and perivascular mononuclear cell cuffing. Leptomeninges adjacent to these sites and covering the cerebellum contain hemosiderin laden macrophages.
