A cross section of the medulla below the bed of aneurysm shows loss of inferior olivary nucleus tissue on the right (arrow) in comparison to preservation of the left ION. Microscopic examination showed neuronal loss and gliosis of right olive secondary to longstanding compression by the aneurysm. Areas of subacute infarction of the medulla estimated at several weeks also were superimposed.
