The rupture point captured in longitudinal section shows loss of vessel integrity, dilated arterial wall with confluent areas of attenuation of smooth muscle, disruption of the elastic laminae and fibrosis with adjacent hemorrhage, hemosiderin-laden macrophages, fibrin and mononuclear cell infiltrate.
