7A1 Atherosclerosis (Case 7)_1
Case 7 History ---- This 84 year old man died following a long course of Alzheimer disease and one day after a stroke which had resulted in right-sided hemiparesis. His past history included hypertension, diabetes mellitus type II, syncope, and invasive well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma from the right anterior thigh. ---- At autopsy the fresh brain weighed 1,220g with histopathology consistent with Alzheimer disease. Examination of the arteries of the Circle of Willis revealed moderate to severe atherosclerosis, and the basilar artery was 50% occluded. An acute 1.5 cm infarct was found in the left basal ganglia. ---- 7A1 Severe patchy atherosclerosis involves the vertebral and basilar arteries.
