There are eosinophilic inferior olivary neurons providing evidence of an acute hypoxic/ischemic process involving the medulla. Notice the neuronophagia of degenerating neurons by microglial cells. In addition, reduced total numbers of ION neurons and astrocytosis likely reflect prior cycles of degeneration of the olivary climbing fiber projections to lost Purkinje cells. (H&E)
