Neurons of the dentate gyrus tend to be largely spared except in severe hypoxia/ischemia. In this case there are numerous residual dentate neurons infiltrated by small astrocytes. In comparison, the adjacent CA4 region (arrow) is completely depopulated and gliotic. (H&E)
