Washington University Experience | VASCULAR | Infarct, Tract Degeneration, illustrative case | 1A0 History
Case 1 History ---- This patient was a 54 year old woman with a past history of cerebral infarction/hemorrhage 4 years prior to her death arising from complications following hemorrhoidectomy surgery. Although we do not have a clear history of the details of her neurosurgical process, it appears that she experienced a left cerebral hemorrhage/hemorrhagic infarct in the region of the left insular cortex, basal ganglia, thalamus and internal capsule. At that time a neurosurgical procedure was performed in which two branches of the middle cerebral artery were ligated, presumably to control hemorrhaging. Thus, the damage seen 4 years later reflects a complex hemorrhage/infarct. Nonetheless, the case is presented as the effects of a remote infarct. The case is also presented in an abbreviated fashion in the Tract Degeneration subsection of the BASIC PROCESSES portion of the atlas.
