Case 13 History ---- This 87 year old patient had a medical history which included atrial fibrillation, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, deafness, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease with stent placed in 2005, and an abdominal aneurysm repair in 2005. He had decreased pain sensation, vibration and position sense in his right lower extremity related to an acute change in 2010 believed to be caused by the aortic stenosis (but stroke had never been ruled out by brain scan). He went in for a hip replacement following a fracture on 6/5 and while in rehab he suffered a large stroke on 6/14. He was evaluated by ED, but the family declined further treatment and subsequently he passed away on 6/18. ---- At autopsy the brain weighed 1,450g. A large left recent cerebral infarct involving frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes, territories corresponding to anterior and middle cerebral arteries. There was no evidence of Alzheimer disease according to the criteria of Khachaturian, CERAD, the National Institute on Aging-Reagan Institute, and a score of A0B1C0 using the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA).
