3B2-4 Close up of a segment of the anterior half of the spinal cord. The anterior spinal artery (arrow, 3B2) shows a thrombosed and recanalized vessel. Various magnifications of the anterior spinal artery in subsequent images show integrity of the wall of the artery in the area of the thrombus, evidence that it was not secondary to vasculitis. These findings suggest the patient experienced a shower of thromboemboli that gave rise to all of these lesions. It is therefore likely that the sudden onset of lower extremity paresis and bowel and bladder incontinence that the patient experienced in August 2008 (i.e., several months before his death) is attributable to these lesions.
