3B4,5 Vacuolation of cortical layers 2 and 3 ae prominent at low magnification but higher magnification images show pan-laminar damage. The cortex contains shrunken eosinophilic neurons, reactive astrocytes and scattered foamy macrophages (the old literature called them “gitter cells” and “compound granular corpuscles”). (H&E)
