2D8 This midbrain lesion shows microthrombi as well as a cluster of small vessels (arrow) variously called “wickerworks” or “blackberries”). Sections from the telencephalon including frontal cortex and occipital cortex show scattered small vessels, many of which are occluded by fibrin micro thrombi. In many instances, the vessel lumina are occluded by eosinophilic fibrin-like material with associated endothelial proliferation. Occasionally, the endothelial proliferation gives the impression that many of these small vessels have multiple lumina some of which are entirely occluded by the rnicrothrombi.
